1. Two writers have written book-lengths accounts of the murder: Arthur Lewis' "Hex", and Ross McGinnis' "Trial of Hex." Lawyer McGinnis' comprehensive work is out of print, but available at several York County Library System branches.

2. The Hex case was the topic of a full-length Hollywood film, "Apprentice to Kill," released in 1988 and starring Donald Sutherland. York native Howard Grossman, the film's producer, returned home for the world premier at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center.

3. Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow criticized the trial: "Our belief in capital punishment as a deterrent is just another form of witchcraft. Apart from the mass desire for revenge, there is a subconscious desire to rid ourselves of what we believe to be an evil person."

4. A second grim event struck the Rehmyer farm in 1930. A 71-year-old man was killed in a machinery accident. An engine stalled on a hill and a trailing baler crushed the man walking between the two machines. "Tragedy seems to haunt the Rehmyer farm ...," a newspaper reported.

5. Teenage defendant John Curry demonstrated artistic skills in prison. After a 10-year prison stint, he joined the Army and was assigned to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff as a cartographer. He helped draft maps for the Invasion of Normany in 1944 and designed a shoulder patch for Operation Overlord, the code name for the D-Day assault.
